PROVIDENCE, RI – January 8, 2024 – In partnership with Citizens, the RISD Museum announces that all visitors will receive free admission on Saturday, January 13, 2024 through Sunday, January 14, 2024 in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr Weekend. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., during both days. A special self-guided gallery exploration will be offered, focusing on artworks that consider the relationship between art and activism.
On Sunday, January 14, 2024, there will be a drop-in screen-printing workshop held from 12-4 p.m., led by artist and RISD design professor, Jess Brown. The all-ages “werkshop” is about empowering youth to use their voices to stand up to and call out injustices. From the Freedom movement of the 1920s, the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960's, to the present-day Black Lives Matter and environmental justice movements, youth have been instrumental in advancing the progress of social change. During this session, participants will explore examples of activism posters to review their style and effectiveness. Werkshop attendees will also use a silkscreen printing method to create their own posters that reflect meaningful moments of their personal journeys.
