RISD Mini Golf

Join us for a special day of mini golf as Spatial Dynamics students present a course inspired by works in the RISD Museum collection. Come learn about these works from the students while playing a round of extremely unique miniature golf, featuring obstacles inspired by styles ranging from Japanese printmaking to abstract expressionism. Free and open to the public!

"There exists a parallelism between an artwork and a game that helps us better understand both: their specific structure, autonomy, cultural and political importance, their imagination. Then there exists mini golf, an ignored game that is most often contained in a kitsch environment, somewhere out in the suburbs. Through the lens of RISD Museum's artworks we managed to reinvent mini golf; we have installed it at Moore Terrace, and we invite you to join our eponymous grand tournament.
This event will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first miniature golf. Mini golf was for the first time set up at the Ladies' Putting Club in St Andrews, Scotland, in 1867. Women, then, were not to play golf, but only its smaller 'lady-like' version. Their 18-hole course was called 'the Himalayas'.
The project aims at updating this first miniature golf course as a form of critical but playful spatial object. Referring to motifs, syntax, methods, and strategies from selected art works at the RISD Museum, students analyzed, appropriated, contradicted, subverted and translated ideas from the history of art and design practices into their contemporary making. They evolved these translations into a 10-hole mini golf course as a mixed media installation, experimenting with structure, material surface, and spatial composition. Absorbed in its play and potentially transformed by it, players (spectators) are, from the very beginning, conceptual parts of the game (artwork). Come + Play."
