Flemish inscription on back in Gothic letters around border: DIT GAF DONAE [S]/DIE MOER M[ER] VRAUE/TAN[N]E TVOS INT JAER MCCCCLXXVIII. Translated as "Donaes de Moer gave this to Milady Tanne, the daugher of De vos in 1478." (Richard Randall, transl., who notes that "It is interesting that the ivory was presented a century after it had been made, suggesting it was still in use and that the donor felt that the ift was of such significance that it was inscripted and dated."
