I try to apply ink in several layers . . . to suggest primordial energy which suffuses mountains and rivers. 

— Huang Binhong

Layers of ink wash combine with bold, throbbing lines to form this intimate landscape of Mount Yandang in Zhejiang, China. Painted when Huang was 86, this dynamic depiction reflects years of experimenting with ink and water. It was also informed by the artist’s travels to famous mountains in China and his personal observations of nature. Mount Yandang has been the subject of landscape paintings since at least the 1200s, inspiring many generations of artists.
