Marks: On the back of the frame, in the upper left corner, the accession number, "48.453", is written in red paint and repeated slightly below it. To the right of the accession number, "S - 5"turned 90 degrees to right is written, followed by "4 [over a cursive L"(?), encircled, all in pencil. Overlapping with the pencil and in pink chalk, "63 / [two illegible numbers, one of which is covered, possibly 20]".In the upper center of the frame, in pink chalk, "20 - 5" (?) is written. In the upper right corner of the frame, "Box 9" (?) is written in pencil and partially obscured by a bracket. At right center, "6218 - 1" is written in white chalk. In the lower right corner, in grayish paint (?), there are two illegible marks, the second of which could be a nine. At lower center, written in white chalk, upside down, "SCHAEFFER"; there is overlapping blue chalk or pencil, "M(?) 2 U - 5 7 1" (?), which has been struck through with grayish paint. Below this, in blue writing, there is an " X" followed by illegible marks. In the lower left corner, in white chalk, there are about six illegible marks, the last of which appears to be an "R".In pencil, overlapping the white chalk makes is written, "New York".There is a penciled double circle which appears on the lower left frame. At left center, there is a faded "Box 9" in pencil; also in pencil, "Waterfall" (unsure but probable).Above this, "CR" is followed by some illegible numbers and then crossed out.In the upper left corner, there are illegible marks in grayish chalk, the second of which could be a nine.On the upper left corner of the stretcher, the accession number "48.453" is written in red paint and rewritten again below it.At upper center there are pencil marks covered in varnish. At center right, there is a dark horizontal line and illegible, faded blue marks. At center left in pencil, there is an "X".On the horizontal brace, at center, there are illegible pen marks. On the vertical brace, at upper center, "8 (?) 481" is written in black.
Seals: On the horizontal brace, at left there is a dark green wax seal, on which is written "PARIS" / [separating dot] / "F. K [illegible but LEIN ?] BERGER" / [separating dot] /"N [EW ?] YORK".On the center of the horizontal brace, there is a circular embossed mark, possibly the remains of a seal. There are two curving parallel lines at top, possibly the outer edges of a line of text.In the center there are three lines that seem to form a triangle. At lower right within the seal there is what might have been an "S."
Label: On the back of the frame, at upper center, there is a white rectangular label, on which is printed (in black except the numerals)"No. 41638" / "PICTURE"; transparent but yellowed varnish or glue is covering this label.Above and to the right of this white label, there is a blue and white rectangular label on which is typed "HAYES STORAGE, Inc." / "FIREPROOF WAREHOUSEEXPERT PACKERS" / "305-7 East 61st StreetNew York, NY"/ (handwritten) illegible marking then "3082-1".At lower center, there is a circular label, upside down, on which is written in blue ink, "8481".In the lower left corner, there are the remains of a label with a red border (appears to be similar to the RISD Museum's red bordered labels). On the back of the stretcher, at upper center, there is a white rectangular label with scalloped edges (quite like the one mentioned above), on which is printed in black (with the numerals in red, "No. 41638" / "FRAME".In the upper right corner, there are the remains of a white label, probably peeled off.In the lower right corner, there is a rectangular label with a red and white border, on which is written in black pen, "Jac. Ruisdael" / "No. 8481 $25000 - ."On the vertical brace at upper center, there is an old browning, circular label with a serrated border, on which is written in black pen "87663 H" /"24/3e Kleinberger"/"5"[?] followed by illegible words. On the horizontal brace, there is a new RISD Museum label with a red border. On the Canvas, at upper center, there is a yellowing fabric label on which is written in black, "2.26.48 A-1" / in cursive "Scha [e (?)] ffer Gallery" / "Metcalf."
